Day 4 | Final Voyage of M/Y Zinful

Our fourth (and final day!) moving Zinful was our longest day at 50.7 nm, but also our shortest day at 6.5 hours of travel time. Today was wonderful cruising, and without the bridges and hustle of large cities. Almost at the very end of this ~200 nm journey, we encountered boat problems โ€“ Tom lost power to the starboard (right side) engine. We were almost to our anchorage by this time, so we decided to troubleshoot once we were safely anchored.

This anchorage, Faber Cove, was a small protected area a ways off from the main channel, and it was perfect for us to limp into with one engine and half an anchor. The bottom was thick clay which held the anchor firmly.

Tom bent far over into the v-drive compartment.

After we anchored, Tom opened the engine bay to see if he could determine the issue of our first major boat problem.

Inside, I opened up the v-drive bay for that engine, and noticed several bolts on the floor. It turns out that these bolts sheared off inside the hubโ€ฆ that held the propeller shaft on.

Good news is that the engine is fine, and the bad news is that itโ€™s useless until we can get it on land for repair.

Luckily thatโ€™s the whole purpose of this trip โ€“ to have it hauled out at a nearby boat yard where we can address our boat problems.
